2001 Toyota MR2 Spyder Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the rear control arm on 2001 Toyota MR2 Spyder?
A: The first step for rear control arm service or repair is to take off the engine under covers. Detach the strut rod by unscrewing 2 bolts and 2 nuts while keeping from turning the nuts before establishing suspension stability and torquing bolts to 78 Nm (796 kgf-cm, 58 ft. lbs.). Use the provided tools to extract the No. 1 lower suspension arm by uninstalling 2 bolts and 2 nuts before torquing bolt A to 87 Nm (887 kgf-cm, 64 ft. lbs.) and bolt B to 103 Nm (1,051 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Remember to avoid turning the nuts during installation because stabilizing the suspension will follow fastened nuts. Matchmarks need to be put on both the suspension member and cam plate of the No. 2 lower suspension arm before taking out the nut and cam plate and cam bolt with torques set at 87 Nm (887 kgf-cm, 64 ft. lbs.) during installation after stabilizing the suspension. After stabilizing the suspension use a new nut to tighten the bolt at 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.). The No. 2 lower suspension arm extraction requires Special Service Tool: 09610-20012. Follow installation with the opposite steps of removal and verify the rear wheel alignment after completing the process.
