2001 Toyota MR2 Spyder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the vacuum brake booster on 2001 Toyota MR2 Spyder?
A: Start vacuum brake booster servicing and repair by detaching the master cylinder as well as the tool box before removing the brake booster vacuum hose and using Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 to separate the 2 brake lines from the ABS actuator. Start by using needle-nose pliers to detach the brake booster through sequential removal of the return spring and clip before proceeding to separate the clevis pin and wave washer then taking out the 4 nuts and clevis pins and finally pulling out the brake booster with its gasket. The installation requires you to place a replacement gasket onto the brake booster afterward tightening the 4 nuts to 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) followed by attaching the brake pedal clevis through a wave washer, clevis pin, and clip while reinstalling the pedal return spring with needle-nose pliers. Special Service Tool 09737-00011 should be set on the master cylinder to initiate pin lowering until its piston receives light contact before flipping the tool upside down for booster push rod and pin head clearance measurement which must be 0 mm (0 inch). The length of the booster push rod should be adjusted using Special Service Tool: 09737-00020 until it makes gentle contact with the pin head. Thread the vacuum hose onto the brake booster before installing ABS actuator brake lines that should be torqued to 15 Nm (155 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.) and 14 Nm (143 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.) with a fulcrum length of 30 cm (11.81 inch) when using the Special Service Tool. The final steps involve installing the master cylinder followed by fluid in the reservoir before bleeding the brake system. The service should also include examinations for fluid leaks and brake pedal adjustments and operational checks. Finish by reinstalling tool box and luggage compartment trim box cover.
