2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the vacuum brake booster on 2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder?
A: The vacuum brake booster repair process starts with unattaching the master cylinder and tool box followed by disconnecting the brake booster vacuum hose and using Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 to remove the 2 brake lines from the ABS actuator. You will service the brake booster by first removing the brake booster with needle-nose pliers to remove the return spring and clip followed by the clevis pin and wave washer and then using 4 nuts and clevis to detach the brake booster before removing it with its gasket. Place a new gasket with the brake booster first and secure the 4 nuts to 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) torque while following it up with attachment of the clevis to the brake pedal using the wave washer, clevis pin, and clip. Finally, reinstall the pedal return spring with needle-nose pliers. When you replace the brake master cylinder use Special Service Tool: 09737-00011 to lower the pin until it makes slight contact with the piston and then flip the tool to check booster push rod clearance with the pin head at 0 mm (0 inch). Complete push rod length adjustment with Special Service Tool: 09737-00020 while the pin head experiences light contact. The installation of the vacuum hose to the brake booster must be followed by attaching the 2 brake lines to the ABS actuator which requires a torque of 15 Nm (155 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs. ), using the Special Service Tool with a 30 cm (11.81 inch) fulcrum length torque wrench. Torque the brake lines to 14 Nm (143 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs. ) using the same tool and torque wrench parameters. In the last step install the master cylinder before adding brake fluid to the reservoir and conducting brake system bleeding procedures while inspecting for fluid leaks and testing the brake pedal adjustment before reinstalling the tool box and luggage compartment trim box cover.
