2001 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the drive shaft on 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: The drive/propeller shaft service requires starting with the removal of the engine No. 2 under cover before moving on to the front propeller shaft. Place matchmarks on the propeller shaft flange and transfer parts before taking off the 4 nuts with washers while maintaining 80 Nm (820 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.) torque. A proper matchmarking of the propeller shaft flange and front differential should be done before removing the front propeller shaft by using 4 nuts and bolts with the same torque specifications. Repetitions of matchmarking occur before removing the 4 nuts and washers from the rear propeller shaft with 106 Nm (1,080 kgf-cm, 78 ft. lbs.) torque. Matchmarks are then placed on the flange and rear differential before removing the 4 nuts, bolts, washers to finish the rear propeller shaft removal. Check both front and rear propeller shafts using a dial indicator to evaluate their damage and runout level. Maximum allowed runout should not exceed 0.8 mm (0.031 inch) and replacement is required if this condition occurs. To inspect the spider bearings for problems check them for wear and damage along with restricted yoke rotation when holding the shaft tightly. Maximum allowable play must stay at 0 mm (0 inch) before the replacement of damaged spider bearings is necessary. When replacing you should handle the propeller shaft tube with caution while in a vise since excessive tightness might cause tube deformation. Start by matchmarking then pulling out the sleeve yoke of the propeller shaft before cutting its dust cover at the pressing-in section in spirals so you can remove it without damaging the propeller shaft and install a new one if needed. The installation of a new dust cover requires Special Service Tool: 09636-20010 which should be pressed into place after achieving a straight universal joint position and application of "A" part MP grease. The sleeve yoke reinserts into the propeller shaft after applying MP grease onto both spline and sliding surfaces while matching the alignment marks before installation. Following installation the process becomes reverse of removal so use a grease gun to insert MP grease into each fitting until it flows around the oil seal.
