2002 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the drive shaft on 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: The repair process of drive/propeller shaft starts with removing engine No. 2 under cover along with front propeller shaft removal. Apply matchmarks on the propeller shaft flange and transfer before you remove 4 nuts and washers by using a torque setting at 80 Nm (820 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.). After placing matchmarks on the front propeller shaft flange and front differential you must remove the 4 nuts, bolts along with washers by using the exact torque specification to remove this front propeller shaft. The matchmarking process begins again for the rear propeller shaft before the technician removes 4 nuts and washers using 106 Nm (1,080 kgf-cm, 78 ft. lbs.) torque. Next follows flange matchmarking of the rear differential together with the removal of 4 nuts, bolts, and washers until the rear propeller shaft is removed. An inspection of both front and rear propeller shafts using a dial indicator must confirm that maximum runout stays below 0.8 mm (0.031 inch). If the maximum runout exceeds this measurement then the shaft needs replacement. The spider bearing needs to be checked for damage and wear while a test of shaft tightness determines the allowable axial play should remain at 0 mm (0 inch); replace the spider bearing if needed. Prior to removal workers should place matchmarks on the sleeve yoke of the propeller shaft and then slowly extract the yoke. Cut the dust cover spirally at the pressing-in part using tools and carefully remove it with a hammer and chisel to prevent damage to the shaft which requires replacement if any damage appears. Install a new dust cover through Special Service Tool: 09636-20010 and keep the universal joint straight while pressing before applying MP grease to the "A" part. Reinsert the propeller shaft sleeve yoke with MP grease on its spline and sliding interfaces then bring together the matchmarks before fitting the shaft within the yoke sleeve. The installation process follows the opposite sequence of removal while grease application through a gun must fill each fitting to the point where oil seals become coated in grease.
