2000 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the drive shaft on 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: Service and repair of the drive/propeller shaft begins with engine No. 2 under cover removal and subsequent removal of the front propeller shaft. Apply matchmarks to the propeller shaft flange and transfer afterward remove the 4 nuts with washers at 80 Nm torque (820 kgf-cm / 59 ft. lbs). Start by applying matchmarks to the propeller shaft flange and front differential and proceed to take out the 4 nuts, bolts and washers applying a torque of 80 Nm before removing the front propeller shaft. The rear propeller shaft needs matchmarking on its flange and transfer component before the removal of the 4 nuts using a torque of 106 Nm (1,080 kgf-cm, 78 ft. lbs.). Next, matchmark the propeller shaft flange and rear differential before removing the 4 nuts, bolts and washers at the same specified torque. Dial indicators need to check for damage and runout on both front and rear propeller shafts. Maximum runout measurements must be below 0.8 mm (0.031 inch) or the shaft requires replacement. Check the spider bearings for damage along with measuring the maximum potential spider bearing axial play during yoke rotation with shaft hand tension which should be less than 0 mm (0 inch) until replacement of damaged components is required. When replacing the propeller shaft tube users must secure the vise grip in a manner that avoids tube deformation. The first step to substitute the dust cover involves marking both the sleeve yoke and propeller shaft so you can pull out the sleeve yoke. Cut the dust cover spirally at its pressing-in area using a saw before removing it with a chisel, hammer and propeller shaft. Replace damaged parts with new ones as needed. The new dust cover installation requires the use of Special Service Tool: 09636-20010 to place while maintaining the universal joint in a straight position during pressing and applying MP grease to section "A". The propeller shaft requires application of MP grease onto its spline and sliding surface of the sleeve yoke before installation. Align the matchmarks and slot the propeller shaft inside the sleeve yoke. The installation process should be performed backward from the removal steps and grease distribution through each fitting must start with a grease gun and continue until oil seal drainage occurs.
