2001 Toyota Echo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing chain on 2001 Toyota Echo?
A: The timing chain service starts with draining engine coolant followed by removal of the RH front wheel together with the RH engine under cover and drive belt and generator. Begin by disconnecting the PS pump from the engine then set the jack under the engine with a wooden block to remove the RH engine mounting insulator. After removing the bolt which holds the liquid tube when A/C is present continue by taking off the 5 bolts, nut, and insulator. The necessary step includes removing the cylinder head cover through 4 nut and ignition coil and 2 PCV hose removal before getting rid of 7 bolts with their corresponding 2 seal washers and 2 nuts. Find TDC/compression position of the No.1 cylinder by turning the crankshaft pulley to face its timing mark "0" and double-check the camshaft timing sprocket timing marks and valve timing controller assembly alignment. Use Special Service Tool: 09213-70010, 09330-00021 along with possibly Special Service Tool: 09950-50012 to remove the crankshaft pulley. Tear down all these components by loosening 13 bolts and a nut along with the torx wrench socket (E8) for stud bolt usage and cautious manual removal of the timing chain cover. The procedure demands removal of 2 O-rings from the cylinder block and oil pan No. 1 followed by extraction of the chain tensioner, chain tensioner slipper and chain vibration damper. The timing chain and sprockets need inspection for elongation that should remain under 123.2 mm (4.850 inch). Also inspect the sprocket diameters which must be at least 96.2 mm (3.787 inch) for the camshaft and 50.5 mm (1.988 inch) for the crankshaft. Examine the thickness of the chain tensioner slipper and vibration damper to verify they have no wear amounting to more than 1.0 mm (0.039 inch). The chain tensioner requires inspection for fluid movement through its plunger and correct locking capabilities. Cut off the oil seal lip while prying out the seal to replace it with new components using Special Service Tool: 09612-22011. Installation of the sprocket requires the crankshaft to be positioned at ATDC 40 - 140 degrees while aligning timing sprockets to ATDC 20 degrees with a torque of 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.) applied to the chain vibration damper. Place timing chain match marks in position and put the chain tensioner slipper into place. After cleaning the old packing material you should apply new seal packing (Part No. 08826-00100 or equivalent) to the timing chain cover. Install the chain tensioner so the plunger is pushed fully inside while locked. Fasten 2 new O-rings followed by the timing chain cover plus new O-ring and water pump after torquing all components to their specified values. Using Part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent seal packing to mount the RH engine mounting bracket will require torquing the bolts at 55 Nm (561 kgf-cm, 41 ft. lbs.). Mount the crankshaft position sensor together with the oil control valve and crankshaft pulley by following the precise torque specifications. The procedure ends by installing the engine-mounting insulator on the right hand side and the pump and generator and belt followed by covering the engine with right hand components and wheel installation and filling the coolant and starting the engine for leak inspection.
