2002 Toyota Echo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing chain on 2002 Toyota Echo?
A: The servicing procedure starts with coolant drain while removing the RH front wheel along with the RH engine under cover and drive belt and generator component. The next procedure requires disconnecting the PS pump from the engine then removing the RH engine mounting insulator by setting a jack under the engine with a wooden block to take off the bolt securing the liquid tube when equipped with A/C before finally uninstalling the 5 bolts, nut, and insulator. To proceed with the cylinder head cover removal start by unfastening 4 nuts then taking off ignition coils along with 2 PCV hoses and 7 bolts that have two seal washers and two nuts. Time the crankshaft pulley to TDC/compression by placing its groove at mark "0" and validating correct placement of all camshaft timing sprocket and valve timing controller assembly marks. Remove the crankshaft pulley with Special Tools 09213-70010, 09330-00021 and in some cases add 09950-50013 (or 09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021) for assistance. You must utilize a torx wrench socket (E8) for the stud bolt alongside the removal of thirteen bolts and a nut to detach the crankshaft position sensor and RH engine mounting bracket and water pump and oil control valve and timing chain cover the proper way through the careful application of 13 bolts and a nut. Remove the two O-rings from the cylinder block and oil pan No. 1 while extracting the chain tensioner and its slipper as well as vibration damper. The inspection of the timing chain and sprockets should confirm they have no elongation beyond 123.2 mm (4.850 inch). Sprocket diameter should measure at least 96.2 mm (3.787 inch) for the camshaft and 50.5 mm (1.988 inch) for the crankshaft. Verify the chain tensioner slipper and vibration damper wear measures less than 1.0 mm (0.039 inch). Verify that the plunger of the chain tensioner operates with ease while maintaining its locked position. Special Service Tool: 09612-22011 is required to install the new crankshaft front oil seal into timing chain cover by tapping until the seal reaches the edge. First separate the oil seal lip and remove it carefully before following this procedure. Install the chain vibration damper after setting the crankshaft at ATDC 40 - 140 degrees and aligning timing sprockets to ATDC 20 degrees. Then install two bolts on the damper and torque them to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.). When installing the timing chain align its match marks while maintaining control of the exhaust camshaft. Next install the chain tensioner slipper and afterward set two bolts on the chain tensioner and torques each bolt to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.) while checking that the camshaft timing sprocket tensions are correct. Use Part No. 08826-00100 or its equivalent as seal packing to coat the timing chain cover contact surfaces before you install the water pump and new O-rings with 16 bolts and 3 nuts according to specified torque values. Begin the installation by mounting the RH engine mounting bracket using four bolts that should reach a torque of 55 Nm (561 kgf-cm, 41 ft. lbs.). The order of assembly continues with installation of the crankshaft position sensor then the oil control valve followed by the crankshaft pulley. Each part needs its recommended torque setting. The repair ends by attaching the cylinder head cover then mounting the RH engine insulator followed by PS pump and generator which requires drive belt installation along with the RH under cover and front wheel. Complete the procedure by adding engine coolant then starting the engine for leak detection.
