2001 Toyota Echo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Vacuum Brake Booster on 2001 Toyota Echo?
A: Service and maintenance of the Vacuum Brake Booster starts by taking out the master cylinder and air cleaner assembly and ABS actuator and then unclipping the vacuum hose from the brake booster. The service begins with brake booster removal following return spring removal and subsequent removal of clip and clevis pin. Then separate the brake booster by uninstalling all 4 nuts and clevis before extracting the booster together with its gasket. Fit the brake booster onto the vehicle with its new gasket after which install and torque all four booster installation nuts until they reach 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). When complete, place the clevis before tightening the lock nut to 26 Nm (260 kgf-cm, 19 ft. lbs.) and insert the clevis pin into its position and secure it with the clip before returning the spring. To replace the brake master cylinder you should measure the clearance between the push rod and tool using chalk marked on an accessory tool placed against the brake booster while expecting 0 mm measurement (0 inch). The booster requires no vacuum when there is an improper push rod clearance. Resolve this condition by operating the brake pedal several times with Special Service Tool: 09737-00020 to adjust the protruding adjusting bolt length while fixing the push rod in place. To finish install the vacuum hose along with the brake booster and ABS actuator and air cleaner assembly and master cylinder follow by filling brake reservoir then bleeding the brake system and leak checking it all while adjusting and testing brake pedal operation.
