2001 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing chain on 2001 Toyota Corolla?
A: The first step for timing chain service and repair involves draining engine coolant and removing the washer tank together with the right-hand front wheel and right-hand engine under cover and drive belt and generator. Use Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to remove the pulley bolt from the engine power steering pump before detaching the pump. Follow the instructions to detach the right-hand engine mounting insulator using a jack device supported with a wooden or rubber block between the oil pan and then remove the A/C piping clamp bolt if present. Start by removing the cylinder head cover that requires shortening bolts and clipping off the ignition coil connectors while also detaching PCV hoses from the assembly. The next step sets the No.1 on TDC/compression with the crankshaft pulley groove facing the timing mark. To remove the crankshaft pulley you should use Special Service Tools: 09213-70010, 09330-00021 before disconnecting the crankshaft position sensor. Please remove the drive belt tensioner right-hand engine mounting bracket and chain tensioner and water pump then timing chain cover without harming any contact surfaces. First remove the crank angle sensor plate and the chain tensioner slipper together with the timing chain, crankshaft timing sprocket and VVT timing sprocket while conducting an inspection for elongation and wear on all parts. You must replace the crankshaft front oil seal using Special Service Tool: 09300-37010 when the timing chain cover gets removed or when using Special Service Tool: 09309-37010 if it stays installed. Install the camshaft timing sprocket and VVT timing sprocket while aligning their timing marks and follow with installation of the chain vibration damper, timing chain as well as the sprockets while verifying the appropriate tension. The installation process requires users to fit the crank angle sensor plate together with the chain tensioner slipper, timing chain cover and water pump. Users must properly apply seal packing (Part No. 08826-00100 and 08826-00080). Proper torque specifications determine the fastening sequence for bolts and nuts. The right-hand engine mounting bracket must install first along with the drive belt tensioner, crankshaft position sensor, and crankshaft pulley which needs Special Service Tools: 09213-70010, 09330-00021. Conclude the installation by adding the chain tensioner then set the chain tension before performing valve timing checks before putting on the cylinder head cover. Check that all components are properly connected and secured. The installation process requires replacement of right-hand engine mounting insulator followed by power steering pump and generator along with drive belt installation before adding right-hand engine under cover and right-hand front wheel and washer tank. The engine needs filling with engine coolant and a leak check must be performed after engine starting.
