2000 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing chain on 2000 Toyota Corolla?
A: Start by emptying engine coolant before removing the washer tank with the right-hand front wheel along with right-hand engine under cover and drive belt and generator. The PS pump engine connection requires removal of the oil pressure switch connector before using Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to remove the pulley bolt for subsequent PS pump pulley detachment and pump removal. The pump requires support through a string. The right-hand engine mounting insulator becomes removable after placing a jack under the engine and using a wooden block to remove the A/C piping clamp bolt. The insulator can then be detached. The procedure necessitates the extraction of bolts followed by ignition coil removal together with PCV hose detachment and disconnecting ignition coil connectors and finally removing the cover from the cylinder head with its gasket. Element Number 1 must be set at TDC/compression by aligning the crankshaft pulley groove to timing mark "0" at the same time as aligning camshaft timing sprocket marks. The crankshaft pulley needs removal through the use of Service Tools 09213-70010, 09330-00021, while using two nuts with a width of 10 mm (0.25 inch) to disconnect the crankshaft position sensor. To avoid surface damage remove the drive belt tensioner followed by the right-hand engine mounting bracket and chain tensioner and water pump and timing chain cover. First remove the crank angle sensor plate and then dispose of the chain tensioner slipper before removing the timing chain and crankshaft timing sprocket and chain vibration damper and camshaft timing sprockets. During removal check the timing chain and sprockets for deformation and wear. The front crankshaft oil seal replacement requires Special Service Tool: 09309-37010 when the timing chain cover is absent yet the seal can be extracted by cutting its lip when keeping the cover. The installation process requires placing the No.1 cylinder at TDC/compression position while aligning the camshaft timing sprocket marks. After this install the chain vibration damper followed by the timing chain and crankshaft timing sprocket. Secure the chain tensioner slipper and crank angle sensor plate together with timing chain cover and water pump before applying specified seal packing (Part No. 08826-00100 and 08820-00080) while torquing bolts to their required values. The right-hand engine mounting bracket together with the drive belt tensioner and crankshaft position sensor and crankshaft pulley require tool usage according to Special Service Tools: 09213-70010 and 09330-00021 while torque requirements apply to the pulley bolt. Apply the chain tensioner to its installation position before setting chain tension and carrying out valve timing checks which leads to proper installation of the cylinder head cover equipped with its gasket and correct torque specifications. Completed engine work requires the reattachment of the right-hand engine mounting insulator and PS pump and generator with drive belt before installing the right-hand engine under cover and right-hand front wheel as well as the washer tank and fulfillment of engine coolant before starting up the engine for leak inspection.
