2001 Toyota Corolla A/C Clutch Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the A/C Clutch on 2001 Toyota Corolla?
A: Subsequent to running the engine with A/C activated at idle speed for ten minutes, disconnect the negative cable from the battery before proceeding with repair or servicing of the compressor clutch. The first step in clutch compressor maintenance includes releasing refrigerant from the refrigeration system together with engine under cover removal and drive belt detachment. The compressor requires removal of its 2 bolts to disconnect suction and discharge hoses which must be instantly sealed with fittings caps to block atmospheric moisture and dirt entry into the system. The compressor requires removal by disconnecting its connector and removing the three bolts. The compressor must be positioned correctly after installing the 3 bolts then tighten them to 25 N.m (250 kg.cm, 18 ft. lb) before reattaching the connector. A step in the installation process requires insertion of compressor oil onto 2 new O-rings before attaching both hoses with 2 bolts controlled to 10 N.m torque (100 kg.cm and 7 ft.lb) and immediate hose connection after removing the caps. The technician must reattach the battery negative (-) terminal cable before performing an inspection of the drive belt and conducting a vacuum of the refrigeration system followed by application of 650 plus or minus 50 g (22.93 plus or minus 22.93 oz.) refrigerant. A gas leak detector will be used to check for refrigerant leakage and the torque at joints will be checked when leakage is detected while inspecting A/C operation.
