2001 Toyota Celica Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the ball joint on 2001 Toyota Celica?
A: The procedure for lower ball joint service and repair starts by removing the steering knuckle with axle hub then continuing with lower ball joint removal through nut and cotter pin removal. Special Service Tool number 09628-62011 should be used for removing the lower ball joint. You should test the ball joint rotation by turning the ball joint stud five times in alternating directions before securing the nut. The torque wrench operation should maintain a continuous movement rate of 2 - 4 seconds per turn before recording the 5th turn reading that falls within 1.0 - 4.9 Nm (10 - 50 kgf-cm, 8.7 - 43 inch lbs.). The first step of installation requires ball joint attachment followed by nut tightening at 103 Nm torque after new cotter pin configuration. The nut should reach 60 degrees torque if there is misalignment between the cotter pin holes. The installation process includes attaching the steering knuckle with axle hub followed by ABS speed sensor testing after which front wheel alignment should be checked.
