2001 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: Is it essential to perform steering angle sensor zero point calibration when replacing the steering angle sensor or ECU, or adjusting the front wheel alignment or steering wheel center point on 2001 Toyota Avalon?
A: It is necessary to perform steering angle sensor zero point calibration after installing or replacing the steering angle sensor or ECU or carrying out alignment adjustments of front wheels and steering wheel center points due to suspension or axle or steering component changes. Start the procedure by joining terminals Ts and E1 of DLC1 using Special Service Tool: 09843-18020 and activate the ignition switch by turning it to ON. Steering wheels should be assembled with an off-center position that stays below plus or minus 3 degrees as a minimum but needs even lower values. The P range shift lever should be activated before pressing the VSC OFF switch for a sustained period until the VSC buzzer sounds. Complete the process by turning the switch off. Operate the brake pedal three consecutive times within two seconds while making sure the VSC buzzer alerts you for a three-second duration. The sensor calibration process is successful when it produces a buzzer sound but needs repetition in case the buzzer remains silent. A check of the DTC system becomes necessary when the VSC buzzer remains silent during this process.
