2002 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to perform steering angle sensor zero point calibration on 2002 Toyota Avalon?
A: Steering angle sensor zero point calibration should be performed at times when replacing steering angle sensors or ECUs or when adjusting front wheel alignment of the steering wheel center point because of suspension, axle or steering part removal and installation or replacement. To start the process connect terminals Ts and E1 or Ts and CG using the Special Service Tools DLC1:09843-18020; DLC3: 09843-18040. You should put the ignition switch to ON position but avoid engine startup. A calibration will be performed on the vehicle only when the steering wheel off center angle remains within 3 degrees of this position. Additional tie rod adjustments are needed for angles that exceed this threshold. You must place the gear selector into position P before continuing to keep the VSC OFF button pushed and pressing the brake pedal once to twice while maintaining this action for two seconds. Preserve your hold on the VSC OFF switch after the VSC buzzer produces repeated beeps through its repeated sounding until the switch beep sequence ends before letting go of the switch. The completion of this operation can be confirmed by the VSC buzzer which emits continued sounds for another three seconds. A malfunction of the steering angle sensor could exist if the VSC buzzer fails to sound during proper execution of the procedure.
