2001 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the vacuum brake booster on 2001 Toyota Avalon?
A: Start vacuum brake booster servicing and repair operations by taking off the air cleaner housing and air cleaner tube before moving to the master cylinder. After removal of the precharge pump assembly you should disconnect the vacuum hose that attaches to the brake booster when VSC is present. Service and repair of the brake booster assembly requires first clearing the path with the removal of lower No. 1 instrument panel and lower LH instrument panel insert and No. 2 heater and register duct. Then the brake booster assembly can be taken out after disconnecting the pedal return spring followed by clamp and clevis pin removal and finishing by loosening four nuts and clevis before pulling out the brake booster assembly with its gasket. The installation requires placement of the new gasket along with the booster followed by connecting the clevis to the operating rod before torquing the booster installation nuts to 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). Return the pedal return spring after securing the clevis pin through the clevis and brake pedal with the help of the clip. To measure the distance between the booster push rod and pin head, set Special Service Tool: 09737-00011 at the master cylinder with the pin lowered until it barely touches the piston then place the tool upside down on top of the booster. The desired measurement should be 0 mm (0 inch). The length of booster push rod should be modified through Special Service Tool: 09737-00020 until it creates a minor contact with the pin head. VSC-equipped vehicles need a precharge pump assembly installed first with the master cylinder after which the brake booster receives its vacuum hose connection. Brake fluid needs to fill the reservoir before performing brake system bleeding and inspecting for fluid leaks while readjusting the brake pedal. To finish the repair procedure install the No. 2 heater to register duct while also reinstalling lower LH instrument panel insert and lower No. 1 instrument panel before performing an operational check.
