2000 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the water pump on 2000 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The water pump maintenance and repair procedure requires removing engine under cover together with engine coolant drainage. First disconnect the air pipe through the removal of the two fan shroud bolts followed by upper radiator hose detachment from the radiator. Start with removing the bolt and dipstick guide as well as the engine wire bracket from the oil dipstick guide. Afterward remove the O-ring from this guide so keep a new O-ring for installation. For vehicles with power steering it is necessary to remove the power steering pump drive belt by releasing both the lock bolt and adjusting bolt. The next step involves removing the fan shrouds through 2 clips and a No.2 fan shroud and four bolts that lead to removal of the No.1 fan shroud. The procedure to remove the A/C compressor drive belt starts with loosening the idler pulley nut and adjusting bolt. The drive belt operating the generator alongside the fan with fluid coupling and water pump pulley requires users to loosen generator pivot bolt and lock bolt along with generator adjusting bolt and water pump pulley nuts for efficient belt removal. Begin the removal by applying 21 Nm torque on the 4 water pump pulley nuts followed by fan extraction which includes both the fluid coupling and water pump pulley. The water pump removal procedure starts with disconnecting the 10 bolts and removing the water pump from its mount along with the gasket while applying a torque of 24.5 Nm to the 14 mm head and 8.9 Nm to the 12 mm head. Always follow the recommendation to exchange the gasket when installing new components. The water pump requires evaluation of coolant leakage through the air hole and drain hole and verification of a smooth and quiet functioning water pump bearing. A water pump replacement is necessary in case these components present any issues. When inspecting the fluid coupling first remove its 4 nuts and fan then inspect for any silicon oil leakage together with potential damage before conducting a necessary replacement. Place the fan together with the fluid coupling onto the 4 nuts before torquing to 5.5 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 49 inch lbs.). The installation procedure follows the exact opposite steps of what was used for removal.
