2000 Toyota Tacoma Brake Pad Set Parts Q&A
Q: How to Properly Replace a Brake Pad Set on 2000 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The front wheel replacement process begins with checking the pad lining thickness via the caliper inspection hole before pad installation whenever pad thickness measures under 1.0 mm (0.039 inch). The caliper needs lifting after removing its bottom side slide pin before securely suspending it in place without disconnecting the flexible hose. Remove two brake pads with four anti-squeal shims and discard the pad wear indicator plate as well as the four pad support plates but reuse support plates which display no damages or defects or rust or contaminants. The technician should verify proper thickness while checking runout before adding the four pad support plates. The installation of new pads requires replacements of both anti-squeal shims and wear indicator plates simultaneously with the pads. Add the pad wear indicator plate to the inner pad and apply disc brake grease to both sides of the inner anti-squeal shims before adding two anti-squeal shims to each pad. The pad installation process starts with the inner pad which gets positioned with the wear indicator plate in the downward position and then follows with the outer pad installation but always avoid allowing oil or grease to contact the pad's rubbing surface. To push in the piston draw brake fluid from the reservoir first then proceed by using a hammer handle or its equivalent. Failure to move the piston should result in bleeder plug loosening to allow fluid evaporation as the piston is pushed in. Pull the brake caliper into position without trapping the boot and then fasten and torque the slide pin to 88 Nm (900 kgf-cm, 65 ft. lbs.). Install the front wheel by torquing it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) then cycle the brake pedal until the fluid reaches the maximum line.
