2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the brake caliper on 2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder?
A: Start brake caliper service through the removal of set ring and cylinder boot with screwdriver tools. Start by placing cloth between the caliper and piston before applying compressed air removal of the piston from the cylinder while keeping fingers away from the piston's front side. The piston seal must be extracted with a screwdriver and the bleeder plug near 8.3 Nm (85 kgf-cm, 73 inch lbs.). Detach the two sliding pins from the torque plate while also dislodging the two dust boots before reassembly but maintain the proper contour of the dust boot metal plate within the torque plate. The adequate pad lining thickness measurement with a ruler requires comparison to standards of 11.0 mm (0.433 inch) and 1.0 mm (0.039 inch), where replacement is necessary when thickness falls below minimum or indicates severe uneven wear. Check the disc thickness with a micrometer that follows minimum standards of 18.0 mm (0.709 inch) and maximum standards of 20.0 mm (0.787 inch). The disc requires replacement either when it reaches the minimum height or shows extensive wear or damaged surfaces. A dial indicator should measure disc runout at 10 mm (0.39 inch) of outer edge distance while maintaining .05 mm (0.0020 inch) runout limit; when this threshold is exceeded refer to bearing play and axle hub runout before adjusting or grinding the disc. The procedure for adjusting the hub disc includes removing the knuckle torque plate and two bolts then unscrewing the hub nuts and disc. Reinstall the disc with a 1/4 rotation in a different position on the hub before torquing the hub nuts to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) and then recheck the disc runout while recording the new measurements. Continue installing the disc until you achieve the best position which results in runout amounts below 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch); discard the disc and perform a new runout check if this threshold cannot be reached. The completion of installation requires placing the torque plate followed by tightening the mounting bolts to 109 Nm (1,112 kgf-cm, 80 ft. lbs.). The process of reassembly requires you to apply lithium soap base glycol grease to specified components while performing the steps in reverse order from disassembly.
