2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What is the proper procedure for deploying the Air Bag and disposing of a steering wheel pad with an Air Bag in a vehicle equipped with an SRS on 2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder?
A: Operating on vehicles with SRS systems requires deployment of Air Bags through the correct tool 09082-00700 (SRS Air Bag Deployment Tool) in outdoor spaces where residents will not be affected during disposal procedures. Whenever deploying the steering wheel pad perform the task at least 10 m (33 ft) beyond the wheel pad and allow it to cool for a minimum of 30 minutes because the pad will reach extreme temperatures. The deployed Air Bag requires you to wear safety glasses and gloves during handling and hand washing should be conducted with water only but without wetting the Air Bag. A battery serves as the power source to test Special Service Tool: 09082-00700 using red clip attachment to battery positive (+) terminal along with black clip attachment to negative (-) terminal while keeping yellow connector unreconnected. Check that the LED illuminates by pressing the activation switch but if the light activates by itself the tool should not be used. Remove the tool from the battery before inspecting both the steering wheel and pad for looseness. Finish the procedure by unscrewing the 3 screws on the column lower cover during a turning motion of the steering wheel. Connect the Special Service Tools 09082-00700 and 09082-00760 by their connectors to the Air Bag connector with caution to prevent damage through non-engagement of the secondary lock on the twin lock. The tool should be kept at least 10 m (33 ft) distance away from the vehicle while all doors and windows are closed before reconnecting it to the battery. Press the activation switch to deploy the Air Bag which will trigger simultaneously with LED illumination after ensuring no persons remain inside or are nearby to the vehicle by less than 10 m(33 ft). Before vehicle scrapping move the Air Bag for deployment and maintain the steering wheel pad attached to the car keeping on gloves as well as safety glasses when handling the vehicle.
