2000 Toyota Corolla Power Steering Pump Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2000 Toyota Corolla?
A: The service and repair operation for a power steering pump begins with measuring the PS vane pump rotating torque which should be smooth without any abnormal noises while maintaining a torque level of 0.3 Nm (2.8 kgf.cm, 2.4 inch lbs.) or below. You should start servicing the power steering pump by removing the suction port union while you break its bracket bolt and two set bolts along with the sequential removal of the 0-ring. Fuel pressure tube Number 1 will become separate when removing its union bolt and gaskets then dissassembling the pressure port union with its 0-ring. Start by removing the flow control valve and its spring before you extract the rear housing together with its wave washer and side plate and take out the 0-rings present in both the rear housing and side plate. Use pliers to disconnect the cam ring and 10 vane plates as well as the vane pump rotor before removing the gasket and two straight pins. A safe method to extract the vane pump shaft with bearing requires pressing out the snap ring while paying attention to oil seal lip integrity. Check the oil clearance between the vane pump shaft and bushing to remain between 0.03 - 0.05 mm (0.0012 - 0.0020 inch) with a maximum of 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch) if potential replacement is needed. Measure all 10 vane plates for their height that should be 8.6 mm (0.339 inch), their thickness at 1.397 mm (0.05500 inch), and their length at 14.991 mm (0.59016 inch) to ensure proper specifications. Examine the vane pump region between rotor groove and vane plate for clearance that should be below 0.03 mm (0.0012 inch). Also test the flow control valve operation before possibly replacing it with the same marked parts A, B, C, D, E, or F. The vane spring length needs measurement with replacement if it fails to meet 33.2 mm (1.307 inch). Employ Special Service Tool: 09631-10030 to install a new oil seal after ensuring the bushing remains undamaged while using Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00340), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) with correct orientation. The procedure for bearing replacement requires users to extract the old bearing and install a new snap ring through snap ring expansion while the bearing needs to be lubricated with power steering fluid before shaft pressing completes the process. Reassembly requires power steering fluid coating of specified parts followed by insertion of the vane pump shaft with bearing using Special Service Tool: 09608-04031 then securing it with a new snap ring. Start by inserting two new straight pins and putting on the cam ring with inscribed mark visible from the outside. Finish up by placing the vane pump rotor with its marking oriented in the same direction. Build the 10 vane plates by attaching the round end on their exterior sides while placing a new gasket onto the front housing while being cautious about gasket orientation. The downflow framework receives a new power steering fluid-coated 0-ring followed by a proper orientation of te straight pins before attaching the wave washer which inserts its projections into the side plate slot positions. Add new 0-rings that received power steering fluid coating to both the rear housing and feed the fluid into it. Then fasten four bolts at a torque specification of 24 Nm (240 kgf.cm, 17 ft. lbs.). Begin by placing the spring and flow control valve with proper orientation before coating a new 0-ring with power steering fluid and installing it to the pressure port union which requires 83 Nm (850 kgf.cm, 61 ft. lbs.) torque. Take the pressure feed No. 1 tube, install new gaskets before fastening it with a union bolt set to 69 Nm (700 kgf.cm, 51 ft. lbs.), then attach the suction port union equipped with a new 0-ring by tightening two union set bolts to 13 Nm (130 kgf.cm, 10 ft. lbs.) and secure the bracket bolt to 43 Nm (440 kgf.cm, 32 ft. lbs.). Measure the rotating torque of the PS vane pump as the last step.
