2000 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and reinstall the Rack And Pinion on 2000 Toyota Corolla?
A: Rack and pinion removal requires front wheel alignment in straight position before pad removal of steering wheel along with the wheel itself. The removal process begins with taking off both right-hand and left-hand engine under covers after you have detached 8 bolts and 4 screws. The column hole cover can be removed after disconnecting the right-hand and left-hand tie rod ends and removing 5 bolts. You should first remove the brace with its two nuts then disconnect the sliding yoke together with the lower ball joint from the lower suspension arm. At first fit an engine support fixture to support the engine and subsequently remove the front sub-frame along with the lower suspension arm by using 3 nuts and 14 bolts for disassembly. The first step includes extracting the engine rear mount insulator from the engine rear mount bracket followed by dismantling the bolts and drive shaft heat insulator set nut based on the vehicle model choice (A131L A/T or M/T, A245E A/T). The engine repair requires detachment of the return hose through clip removal followed by 2 tube clamp disconnection of the rack boot heat insulator. Utilize Special Service Tool: 09631-22020 to disconnect the pressure feed tube following which remove 2 grommets and brackets by unfastening their respective bolts and nuts. Directionally slide the PS rack and pinion assembly to its right-hand side before sliding it to the left in order to remove it. Take care during this procedure not to harm the turn pressure tubes. The PS rack and pinion assembly procedure starts with repositioning it before installing the grommets and brackets to specified torque values along with using the special tool to connect the pressure feed tube similarly secured to the correct torque specification. The installation requires connecting the return hose followed by the tube clamps and rack boot heat insulator which should be tightened using specified torque values. The engine rear mount bracket and engine rear mount insulator get installed following the manufacturer-issued specifications order. Madly reinstall the front sub-frame and lower suspension arm after torqueing each bolt and nut to the specified measure before dissolving the engine support fixture. Begin with installing the brace while attaching the lower ball joint and sliding yoke both before placing the column hole cover. The procedure requires reconnection of right and left tie rod ends before engine under cover installation. Align the front wheels straight before centering the spiral cable and then install the steering wheel while matching its positions adjacent to the set nut. Finally tighten the set nut. The power steering bleeding process should be completed before inspecting the steering wheel alignment and torqueing the steering wheel set nut to 34 Nm (350 kgf.cm, 25 ft. lbs.). After power steering bleeding, install the steering wheel pad while checking the front wheel alignment.
