2000 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How Can You Effectively Service and Repair a Thermostat on 2000 Toyota Camry?
A: The first step for thermostat service requires drain of the engine coolant. First cut off power to the No.2 ECT switch by disconnecting both the engine wire protector from the water inlet and the right-hand cylinder head as well as the No.2 ECT switch connector before extracting the air filter and air cleaner cap assembly coupled with removing the 2 nuts. The water inlet pipe requires disconnection from the left-hand cylinder head by removing both the bolt along with the O-ring on the inlet pipe. Copper barrier grease should be applied to the water inlet threads and new gasket before reinstalling the water inlet and the thermostat after removing three nuts and the gasket from the thermostat. During inspection tests the thermostat should be submersed in water while you heat it up gradually until the valve opens between 80 - 84 degrees Celsius (176 - 183 degrees Fahrenheit) and reaches 10.0 mm (0.394 inch) lift at 95 degrees Celsius (203 degrees Fahrenheit). Thermostat replacement is necessary if measurement specifications indicate the valve remains open below 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) or any other criteria fail to meet standards. Before assembly install the thermostat inside the water pump where it should contact a new gasket while the jiggle valve requires proper positioning against the upper stud bolt. Use a new O-ring for the water inlet pipe while applying soapy water to its surface before attaching the pipe to the water inlet and securing it with a bolt torqued to 19.5 Nm (200 kgf.cm, 14 ft. lbs.). The procedure for engine repair includes reinstalling the engine wire protector while connecting the No.2 ECT switch connector and reinstalling the air filter and air cleaner cap assembly. Finally, add engine coolant then start the engine to check for leaks before verifying the engine coolant level.
