- Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Thermostat on 2000 Toyota Camry?A: Service and repair of the thermostat begins by pulling out all engine coolant. The oil filter should be removed only if an oil cooler is present on the vehicle. Begin the service by removing the two nuts from the water inlet on the water pump cover before removing the thermostat with its gasket. Inspection requires the thermostat to be submerged in water before gradual heating until the valve opens at 80 - 84 degrees Celsius (176 - 183 degrees Fahrenheit) which determines the need to replace it. A proper replacement of the thermostat becomes necessary when the valve lift measures less than 8 mm (0.31 inch) at 95 degrees Celsius (203 degrees Fahrenheit). A replacement thermostat should be installed when the valve remains open below 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). Place the thermostat in the water inlet along with a new gasket while physically aligning its jiggle valve with the protrusion on the water inlet so that the positions permit a 5 degrees tolerance. Mount the water inlet and thermostat with two nuts while torquing them to 8.8 Nm which is equivalent to 90 kgf.cm or 78 inch lbs. After installing the oil filter users should fill the system with engine coolant when their vehicles are equipped with an oil cooler. Begin engine operation then examine for coolant leakage followed by verification of engine oil amount.
