2000 Toyota Avalon Brake Caliper Parts Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Brake Caliper on 2000 Toyota Avalon?
A: The brake caliper service process starts with removing the cylinder boot set ring and cylinder boot through screwdriver usage. A piece of cloth should be placed in between the piston and caliper before employing compressed air to push the piston out of the cylinder while keeping fingers away from the piston front. First remove the piston seal which was extracted from the cylinder before removing the two dust boots. The pad lining measurement must be 10.0 mm (0.394 inch) as the standard which should not drop below 1.0 mm (0.039 inch). The disc measurement needs to be between 12.0 mm (0.472 inch) standard and 10.5 mm (0.413 inch) minimum. Check the disc runout because it should not exceed 0.15 mm (0.0059 inch); if the runout measurement is excessive then inspect the bearing play in the axial direction and the axle hub runout. The disc runout should be adjusted when both tests turn out normal through the removal of two bolts and torque plate and subsequent removal of hub nuts before reinstalling the disc 1/5 of a turn from its original spot on the hub while tightening hub nuts to 103 Nm (1050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Physically place the disc one-fifth of its original distance away from the hub before tightening the hub nuts to 103 Nm (1050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Use the procedure again to check disc runout after each hub position installation until the disc is fully installed in all four hubs. Note both runout measurements and disc positions during inspection. The disc should be installed at the position which provides its least minimum runout value below 0.15 mm (0.0059 inch) yet any runout exceeding this becomes a reason for disc replacement. Refitting the torque plate and tightening its mounting bolts to 47 Nm (475 kgf-cm, 34 ft. lbs.) requires the application of lithium soap base glycol grease to the specified parts before proceeding through the reverse steps of disassembly.
