2000 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the ball joint on 2000 Toyota Avalon?
A: Service and repair of the ball joint begins by removing the front axle hub and then continuing with the lower ball joint service through dust deflector removal by using a screwdriver followed by removing the cotter pin and nut. The proper tool for lower ball joint detachment is Special Service Tool: 09628-62011. The rotator condition of the ball joint stud should be checked before nut reinstallation by performing 5 back-and-forth movements followed by continuous nut torque application at 2 to 4 seconds per revolution until reaching a torque reading of 1.0 to 3.4 Nm (10 to 35 kgf.cm, 8.7 to 30 inch lbs.). The procedure for installation starts with lower ball joint assembly and nut tightening to 123 Nm (1,250 kgf.cm, 90 ft. lbs.), followed by new cotter pin installation while increasing the nut torque to up to 60 degrees when the holes for the pin do not match. To install the new dust deflector use tools including Special Service Tool: 09316-60011 (09316-00011, 09316-00041), 09608-32010 and a hammer which should match the correct alignment between ABS speed sensor holes and steering knuckle and dust deflector. To complete the process you need to replace the front axle hub while verifying the ABS speed sensor signal beside inspecting the front wheel alignment.
