2000 Toyota 4Runner Power Steering Pump Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on 2000 Toyota 4Runner?
A: The first step of servicing and repairing the power steering pump requires measuring PS vane pump rotating torque which should cycle normally without strange sounds and have a maximum reading of 0.27 Nm (2.8 kgf.cm, 2.4 inch lbs.) or less. Use Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to fix the vane pump pulley and stop this movement before removing its nut and pulley from the shaft. The detaching process requires bolt removal from the oil reservoir with its O-ring along with the removal of the pressure port union and flow control valve and spring while carefully extracting the O-ring from the pressure port union. The rear housing and its two O-rings can be removed after unscrewing the two bracket-mounting bolts. The procedure continues with wave washer and side plate removal followed by gasket and cam ring removal accompanied by vane plate extraction until only the vane pump rotor remains without dropping any components. Pull out the vane pump shaft together with the 2 straight pins from the front housing. A micrometer and caliper gauge should be used to inspect the oil clearance between the vane pump shaft and bushing during assessment. The standard clearance must range between 0.03 - 0.05 mm while the maximum clearance should not exceed 0.07 mm (0.0012 - 0.0020 inch for 0.03 - 0.05 mm and 0.0028 inch for 0.07 mm). Check the vane pump rotor's and vane plate's minimum specifications regarding height and thickness and length and their clearance from the rotor groove to plate which should be less than 0.035 mm (0.0014 inch). The power steering flow control valve requires inspection through liquid application of steering fluid to identify smooth performance and leakages. Replace this component if required with one bearing the same markings of A, B, C, D, E, or F. Free spring length measurements should be taken with vernier calipers to confirm values above 33.2 mm (1.307 inch) before replacement. Use the combination of Special Service Tools: 09950-60010 (09951-00330), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) to properly install the oil seal using correct orientation after carefully cutting it free with a vinyl tape-wrapped screwdriver and wiping power steering fluid over its new lips. Reassemble the steering system by treating all indicated pieces with power steering fluid before installing two new straight pins on the front housing with a plastic hammer and finally placing the vane pump shaft followed by the cam ring with inscribed marks facing outwards and then installing the rotor properly oriented. Use 10 vane plates having their round ends towards the exterior before adding a new front housing gasket while maintaining proper placement. Place the side plate and position the wave washer properly so its protrusions occupy the slots. Attach the rear housing using power steering fluid-coated new O-rings and fasten it with 2 bolts that require a torque of 24 Nm (240 kgf.cm, 17 ft. lbs.). Start by setting the spring and flow control valve in the correct orientation before installing them with a new O-ring that received power steering fluid coating to the pressure port union and tightening it at 83Nm torque. Secure the bracket with two bolts at 43 Nm (440 kgf.cm, 32 ft. lbs.), while installing an oil reservoir with a new O-ring that has power steering fluid coating and 3 bolts reaching their specified torque values. Apply the vane pump pulley nut after stopping it from rotation using Special Service Tool 09960-10010 (09962-01000 and 09963-01000). Torque it to 43 Nm (440 kgf.cm, 32 ft. lbs.) while testing the PS vane pump rotating torque for the second time.
