2000 Toyota 4Runner Rack And Pinion Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the Rack And Pinion on 2000 Toyota 4Runner?
A: The first step for rack and pinion repair requires the removal of the pressure tubes through Tool: 09633-00020 before extraction of the 4 union seats from rack housing and control valve housing. The Rack And Pinion assembly needs to be clamped in a vise by means of Special Service Tool: 09612-00012 and the additional use of 2 bolts (Bolt: 90105-10346, Nut: 90170-10198). Before beginning the removal of right-hand and left-hand tie rod ends and lock nuts, note and mark the tie rod end along with the lock nut and rack end. Following proper boot protection, remove the set of 2 clamps in addition to 2 clips before removing 2 boots. The washer stake requires a screwdriver and hammer for unstaking while a spanner can maintain rack and pinion stability to allow removal of the rack end using Special Service Tool: 09922-10010 with proper identification of right-hand and left-hand rack ends. Start by taking away the rack guide spring cap lock nut before proceeding with unfastening the rack guide spring cap, rack guide spring and rack guide and ending with the dust cover removal. To detach the control valve housing and its assembly start by placing matchmarks before removing two bolts which allows you to extract the assembly while removing the O-ring from the rack housing. The bearing guide nut can be loosened using Special Service Tool: 09631-20060, followed by wrapping the control valve shaft with vinyl tape for safe tapping of the valve assembly through the bearing guide nut while maintaining safety of the oil seal lip. Use Special Service Tool: 09922-10010 to remove the cylinder end stopper along with its O-ring so you can press the rack and pinion and oil seal out using Special Service Tool: 09950-70010 (09951-07360) without letting the rack fall. Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00360), 09950-70010 (09951-07360) is utilized to extract both components from their housing. The rack and pinion's runout and wear needs assessment including no more than 0.03 mm (0.0118 inch) maximum runout. You should also examine the needle roller bearing for damages which might warrant rack housing replacement. Apply molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease inside the bearing as well as the bushing but replace the bushing with cracks present. To replace damaged oil seal or bearing use Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00260), 09950-70010 (09951-07150) while installing the oil seal in the specified direction. Install new union seats through screw extraction then install them with a plastic hammer. Replace the oil seal from the bearing guide nut using Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00320), 09951-07100 (09950-70010) by following the correct rotational direction. Steer the rack away from the groove while replacing its teflon ring and O-ring components. When handling the teflon rings of the control valve assembly replace them by keeping the grooves intact. The spacer and oil seal installation process requires Special Service Tool: 09951-60010 (09951-00330, 09951-00490, 09952-06010) with accurate part orientation. Power steering fluid and molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease should be used for coating parts during assembly. Use Special Service Tool: 09631-00350 to install the rack and pinion together with the oil seal after tightening the cylinder end stopper with Special Service Tool: 09922-10010 to 58 Nm (592 kgf.cm, 43 ft.lbs.). The system requires air tightness testing with Special Service Tool: 09631-12071 using a vacuum pressure of 53 kPa (400 mm Hg, 15.75 inch Hg) for 30 seconds. The control valve assembly requires power steering fluid coating on teflon rings and O-ring before installation of the bearing guide nut which should be torqued to 25 Nm (250 kgf.cm, 18 ft.lbs.). Attach the control valve housing together with its assembly by aligning the matchmarks before torquing the bolts to 18 Nm (185 kgf.cm, 13 ft.lbs.). The last step includes fitting the dust cover together with the rack guide, rack guide spring, rack guide spring cap while setting the total preload between 0.5 - 1.7 Nm (4.7 - 17.2 kgf.cm, 4.1 - 14.9 inch lbs.) before securing the lock nut with sealant and torquing it to 51 Nm (521 kgf.cm, 38 ft.lbs.). Position the right-hand and left-hand claw washers with rack ends before achieving 76 Nm (770 kgf.cm, 56 ft.lbs.) of torque while implementing proper alignment along with proper installation of right-hand and left-hand rack boots and clamps and clips that ensure the tube hole remains clear of debris. The installation of 2 turn pressure tubes requires new union seats which must be tightened to 20 Nm (203 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbs.).
