Q: How to remove and install the Rack And Pinion on 2000 Toyota 4Runner?
A: A proper rack and pinion removal starts by setting front wheels straight before uninstalling the steering wheel pad and steering wheel. Begin by unfastening the engine under cover through the removal of all 10 bolts and proceeding to detach the stabilizer bar. Special Service Tool: 09631-22020 helps disconnect intermediate shaft No. 2 together with the pressure feed and return tubes and the right-hand and left-hand tie rod ends. The PS rack and pinion assembly removal process starts by separating the bracket bolt and nut before uninstalling the 2 set bolts, nut, washer along with the PS rack and pinion assembly. The installer should next remove the bracket together with the grommet. Install the grommet and bracket first and then the PS rack and pinion assembly by torquing the rack and pinion assembly set bolt to 165 Nm (1,700 kgf.cm, 123 ft. lbs.) while torquing the rack and pinion assembly set bolt, nut, and washer to 190 Nm (1,950 kgf.cm, 141 ft. lbs.) and finally torquing the bolt and nut to the bracket at 165 Nm (1,700 kgf.cm, 123 ft. lbs.). You must use Special Service Tool 09631-22020 to connect pressure feed and return tubes through tubing torque sequence of 36 Nm and 40 Nm at 365 kgf.cm and 29 ft. lbs. When applying torque they must ensure the torque wrench has 300 mm (11.81 inch) of fulcrum length and Special Service Tool: 5 is exactly parallel to the torque wrench. Connect intermediate shaft number two while performing the installation of the stabilizer bar before setting the front wheel at a straight-ahead position with the vehicle off the floor. First properly position the spiral cable and then set the steering wheel into place following matchmark alignment between the wheel and steering column main shaft before securing the wheel set nut temporarily while connecting the connector. The power steering bleeding process should complete while checking the steering wheel alignment and tightening the steering wheel set nut to 34 Nm (350 kgf.cm, 25 ft. lbs.). For the last step, install the steering wheel pad before checking front wheel alignment then reinstall the engine under cover by tightening its 10 bolts to 30 Nm (300 kgf.cm, 22 ft. lbs.).
