Service of the steering column cover in 2006 RAV4 vehicles begins with disconnecting the negative (-) cable from the battery terminal for a minimum of 90 seconds to avoid Air Bag deployment. The removal of the steering pad requires putting front wheels straight ahead followed by unscrewing the two T30 Torx screws before gently extracting the pad while avoiding Air Bag wire harnesses tension. The disconnected procedures should begin with wires from both Air Bag connectors and the horn connector. To properly install the components you should activate both pins and claws from the covers while verifying a total gap absence. Reinstall the steering wheel assembly using correct matchmarks while screwing the nut to 50 Nm (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft-lbf) before connecting all spiral cable connectors. You should reposition the steering pad while verifying the safety of Air Bag connectors before applying 8.8 Nm force to both screws (90 kgf-cm, 78 in-lbf).
