Toyota Highlander Exhaust Pipe Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the exhaust pipe on Toyota Highlander?
A: Service and repair of the exhaust pipe begins with removal of the Exhaust Pipe Assy Front [17410 / 98-28], exhaust Pipe Assy Center [17420 / 98-28] and Tail Pipe Assy [17430 / 98-28]. The service begins with installing the Tail Pipe Assy [17430 / 98-28] before doing the Exhaust Pipe Assy Center [17420 / 98-28]. Measure the uncompressed length of the compression spring through vernier calipers because it should read exactly 42mm (1.6535 inch). The service should include replacement of the compression spring if its free length deviates from the measured value. Fix the narrow gasket to the center pipe and connect it to the tail pipe by tightening it to 48 Nm (490 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.). Measure the free length of the compression spring in the front exhaust pipe assembly [17410 / 98-28] once more in step two while checking the spring length should be 43 mm (1.6929 inch). The specification for compression spring length is 43mm (1.6929 inch). You must replace the compression spring if this specification is not met. A new gasket must be installed to join the front pipe with the center pipe at 56 Nm torque (571 kgf-cm, 42 ft. lbs.). Subsequently, install a new gasket between the front pipe and exhaust manifold convener while applying 48 Nm torque (490 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.). Verify exhaust gas leaks as the final step of the check.
