In Toyota Echo, Clutch Master Cylinder is important to create hydraulic pressure to pull the clutch when the clutch pedal is pushed. This component translates the foot force into hydraulic pressure to pull the clutch from the flywheel through the slave cylinder. Some of the indications of a bad Clutch Master Cylinder include clutch soft or spongy feel, clutch or hydraulic fluid leakage, gear shifting problems and noisy clutch engagement. Some oil leaks may be as a result of worn seals or cylinder bores and this results to rust and absorption of moisture by the hydraulic fluid. Regarding the hydraulic system of the respective Toyota Echo vehicles, they originally feature a system comprising two independent hydraulic circuits, diagonally split by pairs of wheels in order to guarantee proper function and safety in the case of failure of a single hydraulic circuit.

Toyota Echo Clutch Master Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the Clutch Master Cylinder on Toyota Echo?
    A:
The Clutch Master Cylinder service process starts with removing reservoir filler cap and drawing brake fluid with a syringe until all fluid is removed while avoiding painted surfaces. First disconnect the ABS actuator before moving to the master cylinder reservoir hose where you should slide the clip toward the reservoir to drain the fluid into a catch basin. The next step involves separating the clutch line from the master cylinder by employing Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 while collecting the fluid into a container. Use needle-nose pliers to remove the return spring, clip and clevis pin after which you can remove the master cylinder by taking off its two nuts. Disassembly begins with driving out the slotted spring pin from the inlet union using a pin punch (3 mm) and hammer which allows removal of the inlet union together with the grommet. Use snap ring pliers to push the push rod while you remove the push rod and washer and snap ring sequentially. The clevis and boot separate after unlocking the lock nut. You should lastly remove the piston along with its spring component. Apply lithium soap base glycol grease to the parts before inserting the piston with spring inside the cylinder followed by installation of the push rod and boot that requires correct placement of the washer and snap ring. First install a new grommet to the inlet union before driving the slotted spring pin with the clevis and lock nut temporarily attached followed by union installation. To install the master cylinder secure its body attachment through use of two nuts that require 12 Nm (120 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) torque setting followed by insertion of clevis pin, clip and return spring through needle-nose pliers. Special Service Tool 09023-00100 helps to connect the clutch line to the master cylinder before tightening it to 15 Nm (155 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.). At the same time, route the reservoir hose to the inlet union and fasten it using a clip. To complete the ABS actuator installation on a system requires brake fluid filling and clutch bleeding along with leak checkups followed by clutch pedal adjustment ending with brake fluid filling to the maximum line before filling the cap.
