Toyota Echo A/C Compressor Clutch is a magnetic device that connects the engine driven pulley to the compressor input to allow the air conditioning compressor to start when the cabin switch is turned on. The pulley has an electromagnet that drives a drum which pulls the clutch face taut to only transfer rotational energy through the belt when cooling is on demand. The A/C Compressor Clutch releases to free spin and prevent unnecessary engine load. The A/C Compressor Clutch also automatically switches off when the system is switched off to avoid unnecessary drag. With an engine powered A/C Compressor Clutch, a properly functioning device converts and transfers engine power, enabling the compressor to build refrigerant pressure which supplies cold air. When the A/C Compressor Clutch slips, it may wear, warp, or chew the belt, resulting in weak or absent cooling. Sticking can keep the compressor engaged and increase fuel use. Severe overheating, oil starvation, low voltage, or excessive system pressure may damage some of the components, so repeated Toyota Echo A/C Compressor Clutch failure may occur. In some cases, complete replacement of the Toyota Echo compressor is necessary to restore reliable Toyota Echo climate control operation once again.

Toyota Echo A/C Compressor Clutch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the A/C Compressor Clutch on Toyota Echo?
    A:
The first step to service and repair the compressor clutch consists of two procedures. First run the engine at idle speed with A/C active for 10 minutes followed by engine stoppage and battery negative terminal cable disconnection. Evacuate refrigerant gas from the refrigeration system after which you must remove the engine under cover along with disconnecting the Drive Belt. The first step is disconnecting the suction and discharge hoses from the compressor by unbolted the 2 fasteners while immediately placing caps on open fittings to stop system entry of moisture or dirt. Disassemble the compressor units by first disconnecting the wire harness clip and the connector as well as removing all four bolts. Begin by securing the compressor with four bolts that require torquing to 25 Nm (250 kg.cm, 18 ft.lb) before connecting the connector. Install the discharge and suction hoses to the compressor after applying compressor oil on two new O-rings then fasten both hoses with two bolts that are torqued to 10 Nm (100 kg.cm, 7 ft.lb). The drive belt can be installed after replacing the engine cover following a refrigerant charge method that includes evacuating the system then adding 460 plus or minus 30 g (16.23 plus or minus 1.06 oz.) of refrigerant before leak inspections. Use a gas leak detector to check for refrigerant leakage and verify joint torques if leakage occurs during testing. This should be followed by A/C operation inspection.
