2009 Toyota Avalon Brake Master Cylinder Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and replace the brake master cylinder on 2009 Toyota Avalon?
A: Begin by depression of the brake pedal several times to release vacuum from the booster before extracting the brake master cylinder from the brake booster unit while maintaining grip on the reservoir rather than the piston. The piston must stay inside the master cylinder at all times and should be protected from being pulled out or struck as this can lead to piston fall out. You should install and remove the master cylinder with its piston tip pointed downwards or its horizontal position to maintain safety. Foreign objects should never contaminate the master cylinder piston but if it occurs you should clean it with a shop rag or cloth then rub an even layer of lithium soap-based glycol grease circularly around the piston opening. Use no other types of grease. Start the procedure by draining brake fluid while keeping the engine off and holding the brake pedal until the brake booster loses all vacuum pressure then cleaning away any leaked brake fluid affecting painted surfaces. To continue remove the air cleaner cap with the attached air cleaner hose then disconnect the connector before untightening the clamp. The brake master cylinder sub-assembly requires removal of its No. 1 front brake tube through union nut wrench (10 mm) usage to disconnect the six brake lines. To complete the disassembly remove the two fasteners which secure the front brake tube way with the brake master cylinder sub-assembly from the brake booster assembly. Disassembly requires the removal of an O-ring within the brake master cylinder sub-assembly.
