• Q: How to service and repair the alternator on 2008 Scion xB?

  A: The first step of alternator service includes removing the generator clutch pulley by drilling the generator pulley cap center with a screwdriver and leveraging it open but discarding the cap. Install Special Service Tool (A) 09820-63020 and (B), clamping Tool (A) in a vise before placing the rotor shaft end into it. Apply Special Service Tool (B) to the clutch pulley and untighten the pulley by rotating Tool (B) according to the illustration before removing the generator assembly from the SST and the clutch pulley from the rotor shaft. Pursue generator brush holder assembly removal by mounting the generator assembly on the clutch pulley and disconnecting its 3 nuts and rear end cover. To remove the terminal insulator after the generator brush holder you must unfasten the 2 screws. You must remove the 4 bolts before taking out the bolt and cord clip from the generator rotor assembly using SSTs 09950-40011, 09951-04020, 09952-04010, 09953-04020, 09954-04010, 09955-04071, 09957-04010, and 09958-04011 to disconnect the coil. Continue operations by first removing the washer and then the generator rotor. Finally remove the generator drive end frame bearing by taking out its 4 screws and bearing retainer before tapping out the bearing with Special Service Tool 09950-60010 and a hammer and utilizing SSTs 09951-00250, 09950-70010, 09951-07100 when needed.
