2007 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power Rack And Pinion on 2007 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: First service and repair work on the power steering rack and pinion requires removing the steering wheel assembly to protect the spiral cable before disconnecting the negative battery terminal for 90 seconds to deactivate the Air Bags. Start by setting the front wheels straight before removing the steering wheel pad and assembly with its bolts and proceeding to remove the No. 1 and No. 2 engine under covers by their respective bolts. The service and repair of the power steering rack and pinion starts by disconnecting the left and right tie rod end assemblies, the engine oil filter assembly through clip and hose removal, and the No. 2 intermediate shaft by steering wheel rotation to the right position. The pressure feed tube assembly requires removal of the union bolt and gasket while SST 09023-38401 must be used to disconnect the return tube assembly. Start by removing the left and right tie rod end sub-assemblies then marking them so they can be reinstalled before removing the power steering rack and pinion assembly through the Rack And Pinion assembly set bolts, nuts along with washers. To disassemble the power steering rack and pinion assembly mount it in a vise with SST 09630-00014 (09631-00142) then remove the turn pressure tube assembly using SST 09023-38201 and extract the clip rack boot and clamp by maintaining boot integrity. Apply a screwdriver and hammer to take out the steering rack end while protecting the steering rack equipment. Install SST 09922-10010 to remove both the rack guide spring cap lock nut and rack guide spring cap. Proceed to remove the rack guide spring followed by rack guide sub-assembly and dust cover and control valve housing containing the control valve assembly while marking important alignment matchmarks. First remove the bearing guide nut by using SST 09631-20060 and use a plastic hammer to tap out the valve assembly before extracting the cylinder end stopper and spacer with SST 09922-10010. Press out the steering rack together with the oil seal by using SST 09950-70010 (09951-07200) then check the steering rack's condition for runout and wear which must be below 0.03 mm (0.0118 inch). The needle roller bearing must be inspected for damage before receiving an application of molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease. The oil seal and bearing installation requires the correct direction placement of SST 09950-60010 (09951-00260) and SST 09950-70010 (09951-07150) tools. Evaluate and replace the bush when discovered to be cracked then treat it with grease before putting it into place. To prevent groove damage install new teflon ring and O-ring onto the steering rack during replacement. When installing the control valve's teflon rings ensure they do not incur damage to their shape. The control valve housing requires insertion of a fresh union seat. Start with power steering fluid or grease coating of the parts before you use SST 09631-00350 to install the power steering rack and pinion housing sub-assembly. Oil seal installation should be carefully performed. Install the spacer together with the cylinder end stopper then torques the stopper using SST 09922-10010 to 110 Nm (1,122 kgf-cm, 81 ft. lbs.) while performing an air tightness test with SST 09631-12071. The control valve assembly should receive teflon coating before its installation which must occur without breaking the components. Set the bearing guide nut with SST 09631-20060 to 24.5 Nm (250 kgf-cm, 18 ft. lbs.) while also performing stake nut maintenance. Insert the control valve housing together with the valve assembly while matching the specified marks before tightening the bolts to 18 Nm (180 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.). Attach the rack guide sub-assembly together with the rack guide spring as well as the rack guide spring cap after applying sealant to the cap threads. Adjust total preload by placing rack ends temporarily and torquing the rack guide spring cap to 25 Nm (250 kgf-cm, 18 ft. lbs.) after which check for correct preload specifications. Tighten rack end and washer to 99 Nm using 1,014 kgf-cm torque which should not contact the rack during installation. The rack boot should be installed together with its clamp and clip while checking for any blockages in the tube hole. Fasten the two turn pressure tubes with SST 09023-38201 by torquing them to 23 Nm (230 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.). Completion of the power steering operation requires that you first install the Rack And Pinion assembly followed by torquing both new set bolts to 120 Nm (1,250 kgf-cm, 89 ft. lbs.) while connecting the tie rod ends before performing checks for air bleed from the system and front wheel alignment.
