2007 Scion tC Rack And Pinion Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to disassemble the Rack And Pinion on 2007 Scion tC?
A: The first step to disassemble the rack and pinion starts by fixing power steering link assembly with Special Service Tool: 09023-38201 to remove left and right turn pressure tubes and then securing the assembly with Special Service Tool: 09612-00012 while taping the tool before usage. Mark the tie rod end and rack end before loosening the lock nut and then remove the tie rod end along with its lock nut from both left and right tie rod end sub-assemblies. The left tie rod end inspection process requires a vise clamp to hold it while attaching a nut to the stud bolt and exercising ball joint motion before torque testing for 0.49 to 3.43 Nm; assembly replacement is needed if results differ. The right tie rod end inspection procedure should be repeated following the same steps. Use caution when removing two rack and pinion boot clips before you can loosen and remove the No. 2 and No. 1 rack and pinion boot clamps without damaging the boot. To remove the no. 2 and no. 1 rack and pinion boots first then the rack and pinion end sub-assembly requires unstaking RH and LH claw washers through screwdriver and hammer while holding the rack and pinion with a vise clamp and 22 mm wrench with the use of special service tool 09922-10010 to separate rack ends and claw washers. You can take off the rack guide spring cap using a 24 mm straight hexagon wrench before you remove the compression spring and rack guide. Begin by disconnecting the power steering control valve through removing the bolts which secures the control valve housing followed by the gasket before covering the spline with vinyl tape. The oil seal requires protection before tapping out the control valve with a plastic-faced hammer as you remove the four control valve spacers. Special Service Tool: 09950-70010 (09951-07100) and 09950-60010 (09951-00240) alongside a press equipment will extract the control valve upper bearing and upper oil seal. The Special Service Tool: 09631-20120 enables removal of the cylinder end stopper so that a screwdriver can carefully extract the O-ring and bush from inside. A M14 x P1.5 bolt can be used to press the power steering rack from its position and the subsequent removal of the cylinder end stopper oil seal needs to be done while paying attention to protect the oil seal groove from damage. The power steering cylinder tube oil seal requires Special Service Tools: 09612-70100 (09612-07110, 09612-07210) and tool tip and interior application of MP grease before insertion at a slanted angle to contact the seal then install the tool. Apply Special Service Tool: 09612-07240 properly to the rack housing before using a press to remove the power steering cylinder tube oil seal while making sure to avoid damaging the housing structure. Change Special Service Tool (09951-07150) when needed based on the required tool length.
