2006 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service the exhaust pipe on 2006 Toyota RAV4?
A: It is necessary to disconnect the negative battery cable and wait for a minimum of 90 seconds prior to servicing the exhaust pipe to inhibit Air Bag and seat belt pretensioner activation. Remove first the heated oxygen sensor for Bank 1 Sensor 2. Then remove the tailpipe assembly by disassembling two bolts and two compression springs and disconnecting exhaust pipe supports and dismantling the gasket from the center exhaust pipe. Proceed by taking out the center exhaust pipe assembly through removal of 2 bolts followed by disconnecting the 3 exhaust pipe supports before you remove the gasket from the front exhaust pipe. To remove the front exhaust pipe assembly start by taking out two bolts then the two compression springs followed by removing the front exhaust pipe before taking out the gasket installed on the exhaust manifold. Use a vernier caliper to measure the front exhaust pipe compression springs for free length. Replace the springs if their measurement falls below 41.5 millimeters (1.634 inches). Use a new gasket that sits squarely against the exhaust manifold and maintain its proper orientation before installing it without pushing it into position. Connect the front exhaust pipe using 2 compression springs, 2 bolts which need to be torqued to 43 Nm (438 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.). The center exhaust pipe assembly requires a new gasket on the front exhaust pipe followed by attaching the 3 exhaust pipe supports through the center exhaust pipe using 2 bolts which should be torqued to 43 Nm (438 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.). The inspection of compression spring free length determines replacement if it falls under 38.5 mm (1.516 inch). To mount the tailpipe gasket properly install it with equal attention to the center exhaust pipe while making sure its position is right and keeping the gasket from excessive force when installing. Install the tailpipe after connecting its supports. Use the 2 compression springs and 2 bolts to secure the tailpipe before torquing them to 43 Nm (438 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.). Reattach the Bank 1 Sensor 2 heated oxygen sensor before reconnecting the battery cable on the negative terminal and perform an exhaust gas leak inspection and repair any leaks by tightening affected areas and replacing malfunctioning parts.
