2006 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the axle shaft assembly on 2006 Scion xB?
A: The service and repair of front drive shaft assembly requires removal of manual transaxle oil using 39 Nm torque or automatic transaxle fluid at 25 Nm torque. Use Special Service Tool 09930-00010 with a hammer to safely remove the front axle hub nut and make sure that the stake area becomes fully loose without harming the drive shaft screw. To proceed with the disassembly separate the front speed sensor by unfastening its bolt then clip followed by untethering the front stabilizer bar and front No. 1 suspension lower arm sub-assembly. Before proceeding with the front drive shaft separation disconnect the tie rod end sub-assembly using Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 followed by disconnecting the front drive shaft assembly through hammer-tapping using plastic-faced hammer while ensuring the boot and speed sensor rotor remain free from damage. Remove the front drive shaft assembly LH by using Special Service Tools: 09520-01010, 09520-24010 (09520-32040) and detach the front drive shaft assembly RH by using a brass bar while hitting with a hammer while making sure the oil seal and boot remain undamaged. Connect the front axle assembly LH using Special Service Tool: 09608-16042 (09608-02021, 09608-02041) to stop damage to the hub bearing. Examine the front drive shaft unit components for any movement as well as boot deterioration. Using a screwdriver or needle nose pliers detach the front No. 2 axle inboard joint boot clamp and the front axle inboard joint boot clamp before disconnecting the inboard joint boot from the inboard joint. Before removing the inboard joint assembly you must mark the joints while also avoiding punch usage for marking. Begin by separating the drive shaft damper setting clamp followed by the front drive shaft damper RH and finally remove the outboard joint boot clamps and its boot. Systematically install the front drive shaft dust cover LH through Special Service Tool: 09527-10011 and a press while also installing the new hole snap ring and the outboard boot with grease. Test the outboard joint boot clamp by measuring its clearance since it must stay below 0.8 mm (0.031 inch). Connect LH front drive shaft assembly after applying gear oil or ATF to the spline then link the drive shaft to the front axle with caution toward the outboard joint boot and speed sensor rotor. You should join the tie rod end sub-assembly to the front suspension lower arm sub-assembly while tightening them at specified torque levels and then install the front stabilizer bar. You should install the front speed sensor along with the axle hub nut after installation while also staking the nut. The final tasks involve reinstallation of the engine under cover LH followed by installing the front wheel and proper transaxle fluid addition for which measurements should be performed before checking the front wheel alignment and ABS speed sensor signal.
