- Q: How to service and repair the rear Wheel Hub on 2006 Scion xA?A: The service and repair of the rear wheel hub starts with inspecting the vehicle system by removing the rear wheel and rear brake drum sub-assembly. An assessment of bearing backlash using a dial indicator near the center of the wheel hub requires checking that the measurement remains below a maximum of 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch). If the measurement exceeds this threshold, replace the rear wheel hub and bearing assembly. The dial indicator check inside the hub bolt needs to reveal less than 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch) deviation; an amount beyond that standard requires replacement of the rear wheel hub and bearing assembly. Follow the identical steps for right-hand and left-hand sides when removing the component by first taking off the rear wheel along with its brake drum sub-assembly followed by disconnecting the skid control sensor connector and uninstalling the four hub and bearing assembly bolts. When installing the assembly combine the hub with the bearing and bolt it to the 4 mounting points with a torque of 61 Nm (622 kgf-cm, 45 ft. lbs.) before reattaching the skid control sensor connector without twisting the sensor wire. Before reattaching the rear brake drum sub-assembly and rear wheel the technician needs to inspect rear wheel deviation and backlash before torquing the wheel to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). At the end of the process verify that the ABS speed sensor signal performs correctly.
