2006 Scion xA Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the exhaust pipe on 2006 Scion xA?
A: Service of the exhaust pipe begins by disconnecting the negative battery cable followed by a 90-second wait time to avoid activating the Air Bag and seat belt pretensioners. Take the 2 bolts to remove the shift lever knob (for Manual Transaxle) as well as the rear console box together with the front floor panel brace. The first step is to disconnect the tailpipe by unfastening its bolt and clamp and then removing the two exhaust pipe supports and taking out the tailpipe along with its gasket. Remove the front exhaust pipe by disconnecting the heated oxygen sensor connectors then removing the grommet followed by the 2 bolts and 2 compression springs before you disconnect the exhaust pipe supports to remove the unit together with the exhaust manifold gasket. Sanitize the Bank 1 Sensor 1 and Bank 1 Sensor 2 heated oxygen sensors with Special Service Tool: 09224-00010. Begin with Part 2 of the heated oxygen sensor for Bank 1 then tighten the hardware to 40 Nm. Apply this torque when using Special Service Tool: 09224-00010 but increase it to 44 Nm without the tool. Utilize a 30 cm (11.81 inch) torque wrench with a fulcrum length to obtain this measurement. The same installation method should be used for the heated oxygen sensor that monitors Bank 1 Sensor 1. Before installing the front exhaust pipe users should measure the compression spring length using a vernier caliper it should be at least 40.5 mm (1.594 inch) and replacement is necessary if the measurement falls below this benchmark. A plastic-faced hammer and wooden block in combination will install a new gasket correctly until the surface reaches flush with the exhaust manifold and the gasket must be used once only. After connecting the 2 exhaust pipe supports, mount the exhaust pipe then secure it with 2 compression springs joined with 2 bolts at 43 Nm (438 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.), before reuniting the 2 heated oxygen sensor connectors and adding the grommet. To install the tailpipe begin by placing a new gasket on the front exhaust pipe and then mount it with the 2 exhaust pipe supports before tightening the clamp and bolt to 32 Nm (326 kgf-cm, 24 ft. lbs.). First inspect the exhaust gas leaks before tightening the front panel brace with its two bolts at 20 Nm torque. After that, secure the rear console box and shift lever knob (Manual Transaxle only). After disconnecting the negative battery terminal reattaching the cable you must initialize the system since some systems demand a restart procedure when the battery is disconnected.
