2005 Toyota Solara Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the PARK/NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH ASSEMBLY (ATM) on 2005 Toyota Solara?
A: A complete PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY (ATM) replacement requires first taking out the battery alongside the engine cover sub-assembly No.1 and air cleaner assembly along with air cleaner hose No.1 and intake air resonator sub-assembly and engine under cover LH. The floor shift cable transmission control shift requires the disconnection of the park/neutral position switch connector followed by removal of the control shaft lever nut and disconnection of the control cable from the lever before removing the clip to separate the cable from its bracket. The next step involves removing the park/neutral position switch assembly by removing its nut followed by its washer along with the control shaft lever while prying up the lock plate and unthreading the lock nut and lock plate which allows pulling out the switch after taking out the 2 bolts. The new park/neutral position switch assembly needs to be attached to the manual valve shaft before installing two bolts temporarily followed by inserting a fresh lock plate which should be secured with a torque of 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm, 61 inch lbs.). After installing the control shaft lever temporarily you should turn it counterclockwise until it reaches the end and follow with clockwise movement of two notches before removing it. Secure the new park/neutral position switch assembly by setting its groove at the neutral basic line while you keep the switch in position then tighten the 2 bolts to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). Use a screwdriver to stake the nut at the lock plate before installing the control shaft lever along with washer and nut by tightening to 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). Connect the switch connector followed by connecting the control cable with nut to the control shaft lever until it reaches 15 Nm torque (153 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.). Attach the new clip on the control cable to its bracket. The repair sequence ends with an engine under cover LH reinstallation and the installation of intake air resonator sub-assembly and air cleaner hose No.1 as well as air cleaner assembly and sub-assembly No.1 with the battery before shift lever position adjustment and park/neutral switch assembly inspection and system initialization.
