2005 Toyota MR2 Spyder Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the front Brake Pad Set on 2005 Toyota MR2 Spyder?
A: The brake pad replacement process starts by removing the front wheel followed by fastening the disc with temporary hub nuts. To determine pad replacement you must check the lining thickness through the caliper inspection hole. Replace the pads if the width is less than 1.0 mm (0.039 inch). Detach the shock absorber flexible hose by removing its bolt. After securing the brake caliper through a sliding pin hold lift the caliper while unlocking the bottom installation bolt which should avoid disrupting the flexible hose connection to the brake caliper before safely suspending the caliper. Check the two pads and four anti-squeal shims and two pad support plates fit for reuse after verifying they lack deformation, cracks and wear, free from rust and have no foreign particles or dirt present. Thoroughly examine the disc for thickness and runout measurements prior to pad support plate installation because they should never be adjacent opposite one another. To install new pads simultaneously change the anti-squeal shims by applying disc brake grease to both sides of the outside-facing inner anti-squeal shims and then place the shims on the outer pad and inner pad before installing the inside pads with their pad wear indicator plate downward and finally the outside pad while maintaining a friction surface free of oil or grease. To operate the piston for brake fluid removal proceed by drawing out some fluid from the reservoir while gently pushing the piston with a hammer handle or its equivalent; when facing resistance loosen the bleeder plug to let fluid out while completing the piston operation. You must torque the cylinder bolt to 34 Nm (350 kgf-cm, 25 ft. lbs.) after temporarily fixing the cylinder on the torque plate using the bottom installation bolt with a sliding pin engaged. Connect the adjustable hose tube to the shock absorber followed by installation of the bolt at 29 Nm (296 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.). To finish the installation thread the front wheel while torquing it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Next perform several pedal depresions of the brake and confirm that the fluid reaches the max line.
