• Q: How to replace the rear wiper motor assembly on 2005 Toyota Matrix?

  A: You start replacement of the rear wiper motor assembly by taking out first the rear wiper arm cover and next the nut and the entire rear wiper arm and blade system. Apply a deep socket (24mm) under the w/washer packing nut to detach the rear wiper link pivot. Insert a taped screwdriver into the back door glass's opening then push the 9 claws to free the rear wiper motor cover. To access the rear wiper components, disconnect 2 rear defogger connections and then remove 2 nuts and the whole rear wiper motor with bracket-and-shaft-cover assembly. After disconnecting the connector take out the junction switch nut and remove the 3 screws and the rear wiper motor assembly along with its 3 bolts. Follow the illustration to install and then remove the rear wiper motor grommet. Use 3 bolts to fasten the rear wiper motor assembly and tighten them to 5.5 N.m (56 kgf.cm, 49 in.lbf). Then attach the 3 screws to secure the rear wiper motor & bracket. Reconnect the connector before installing the junction switch with its nut. Link the two rear defogger connectors. Place the bracket and motor assembly on the shaft cover and fasten the two nuts at 5.5 N.m (56 kgf.cm) torque. Position the w/washer packing nut over the rear wiper link pivot and tighten it with a 7.0 N.m torque achieved using both a 24mm deep socket wrench and a torque wrench. Wipe down both arm serrations with a wire brush before placing the RR wiper arm & blade assembly in its proper position with the nut at 5.5 N.m torque. Use hand pressure to lock the arm hinge when screwing the nut. Check how well the wipers work as you spray water or washer fluid on the windshield to confirm correct operation without touching the car body.
