2005 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Vapor Canister on 2005 Toyota Highlander?
A: The procedure starts with unbolting 4 screws and 2 compression springs from the exhaust pipe assembly center until you separate the center exhaust pipe from four exhaust pipe supports while deleting the 2 gaskets securing the exhaust pipe front and center. Start by removing the front floor heat insulator No.3 through bolt unscrewing of its four bolts followed by removing the heat insulator. The charcoal canister assembly needs the pump module connector and fuel emission hose together with the air inlet line hose and fuel tank vent hose to be detached. You must push the connector deep into the charcoal canister to access the locking tab and pinch portion A before pulling out the connector. You must remove three nuts holding the charcoal canister into place. The installation of the charcoal canister assembly requires you to tighten its 3 nuts to 5.5 N.m (56 kgf.cm, 49 in.lbf). The installation requires placement of front floor heat insulator No.3 with its 4 nuts tightened to 4.9 N.m (50 kgf.cm, 43 in.lbf). Reinstall the exhaust pipe center by attaching it to exhaust pipe supports via 4 supports and using a new gasket to affix the center section to the front pipe through 2 bolts which require 56 N.m (571 kgf.cm. 41 ft.lbf) torque adjustment. As measured by a vernier caliper the free length of the compression spring should extend to 40.5 mm (1.594 in.) from center to tail; replace the spring if it falls below this measurement. The technician should complete the installation by placing two bolts and two compression springs on the pipe tail for an intended torque of 48 N.m (489 kgf.cm, 35 ft.lbf) while using a new gasket. Check exhaust gas leaks while tightening areas that require attention for leak prevention. Also replace any detected damaged components.
