2005 Toyota Echo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to disassemble the Rack And Pinion on 2005 Toyota Echo?
A: When disassembling the rack and pinion equipment users must refrain from overtorquing the vise. The first step requires using SST 09023-38200 to remove the 2 turn pressure tubes and extract the 4 O-rings from their mounts. Secure the Rack And Pinion assembly inside SST 09612-00012 when placed within a vise. Begin the tie rod end and lock nut removal procedure by labeling both ends before untightening the lock nut and moving to the opposite side. With a screwdriver, gently untighten the clamp of RH and LH clips, clamps and rack boots until enough clearance is achieved and mark down both rack boots. SST 09922-10010 should be used to remove the LH rack end by holding the RH rack end before you move on to holding the rack and pinion LH side for removing the RH rack end in the correct direction with SST 09922-10010. Begin removal of the rack guide spring cap lock nut with SST 09922-10010 and move to a hexagon wrench (19 mm) to take off the rack guide spring cap followed by the rack guide spring and rack guide spring spacer and rack guide sub-assembly. The control valve assembly requires marking of the housing before removing 2 bolts which allows assembly extraction for gasket removal. The proceed with needle nose pliers to extract the snap ring from the cylinder end stopper before removing the stopper. Press out the rack and pinion with the bushing using SST 09950-70010 (09951-07200), followed by the O-ring removal from the bushing. Through the use of SST 09950-60010 (09951-00240) and SST 09950-70010 (09951-07360) tools press the oil seal until it comes out correctly from the rack housing but avoid damaging it. Use a dial indicator to analyze rack and pinion runout and tooth wear and damage which should not exceed 0.1 mm (0.004 inch) maximum and the back surface needs to be checked for wear. The needle roller bearing requires inspection for damage while the rack housing should receive replacement if faulty before an application of molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease to the bearing's internal portion. After performing necessary removal procedures for the bushing with SST 09612-24014 (09613-22011), try to replace the oil seal by applying power steering fluid to its lip before installing it using the SST tool combination of 09950-60010 (09951-00210, 09951-00340, 09952-06010) and 09950-70010 (09951-07100) while confirming proper installation direction. The repair method includes careful teflon ring and O-ring removal from the rack and pinion followed by power steering fluid coating of new components and proper installation of both parts to the rack and pinion. Installation of the oil seal requires SST 09950-60010 (09951-00210, 09951-00370, 09952-06010), 09950-70010 (09951-07360) which must be used according to correct orientation before installing the rack and pinion with SST 09631-10041 while scraping burrs and applying power steering fluid on all parts. Put the bushing inside while using a fresh O-ring coated with power steering fluid and make sure that the oil seal lip stays undamaged. To complete the installation use needle nose pliers for pushing in the end stopper inside the cylinder followed by ring snap placement. Perform an air tightness test through the application of SST 09631-12071 (09633-00010) together with 53 kPa (400 mm Hg, 15.75 inch Hg) vacuum for 30 seconds to evaluate vacuum stability. The installation process requires new control valve gaskets, precise matchmark alignment, assembly insertion and torquing the two bolts to 21 Nm (220 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.). Registration of rack guide sub-assembly, rack guide spring spacer, rack guide spring and rack guide spring cap must be followed by correct orientation before sealant application on the rack guide spring cap finishes the installation. The procedure to adjust total preload begins by installing the RH and LH rack ends briefly and torquing the rack guide spring cap to 25 Nm (250 kgf-cm, 18 ft. lbs.) while rotating the control valve shaft to achieve a 12° angle position before unfastening the cap when the spring stops functioning to secure it at a preload of 1.2 - 1.4 Nm (12 - 14 kgf-cm, 10.4 - 12.2 inch lbs.) using SST 09616-00011. The rack guide spring cap lock nut installation process requires the application of sealant before torquing it to 28 Nm (290 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.) with SST 09922-10010 while verifying the total preload again. To complete the operation, screw on the RH and LH rack ends by applying torque of 62 Nm with SST 09922-10010 then add the rack boots followed by clamps and clips for each side while verifying that the rack and pinion end hole remains unobstructed before tightening the clamp with SST 09521-24010. Repeat these steps to the opposite side.
