  • Q: How to remove and install the axle shaft while ensuring the integrity of the ABS speed sensor and other components on 2005 Toyota Echo?
    A: Start the axle shaft removal procedure by supporting the hub bearing with Special Service Tool: 09608-16042 (09608-020211 09608-02041) particularly when the vehicle must rest on it. Detach the drive shaft from the axle hub before slowly working to preserve the ABS speed sensor rotor serrations. The first step includes taking off the front wheel together with draining the gear oil (M/T) or ATF (A/T). Next, use Special Service Tool: 09930-00010 and a hammer for unstaking the drive shaft lock nut during braking procedures. The next step consists of disconnecting the steering knuckle from the lower suspension arm through removal of the clip and nut followed by the use of Special Service Tool: 09628-00011 (09628-00030, 09628-00040, 09628-00050). The removal of both the tie rod end nut and cotter pin allows for steering knuckle separation from the steering knuckle through the use of Special Service Tool: 09628-62011. Start by disconnecting the drive shaft from axle hub with a plastic hammer taking precautions to avoid harming the boot and ABS speed sensor rotor. Afterward remove the drive shaft using Special Service Tool: 09520-01010, 09520-24010 (09520-32040) while ensuring dust cover and oil seal stay entire. Installation of the inboard joint shaft requires a new snap ring treated with gear oil and positioned with downward orientation before being tapped into place through brass bar contact with a hammer. Test the drive shaft to ensure it displays 0.08 to 0.12 inch (2 - 3 mm) of axial motion yet cannot be unscrewed by hand. After checking both the boot and ABS speed sensor rotor carefully, proceed to connect the drive shaft to the axle hub. The tie rod end connection to the steering knuckle requires 49 Nm torque (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.) and you should install a new cotter pin along with tightening the nut as required. Apply a torque of 98 Nm (1,000 kgf-cm, 72 ft. lbs.) to join the steering knuckle with lower suspension arm before adding a new clip when adjusting the mounting nut. Install the new drive shaft lock nut by applying brakes before tightening it to 216 Nm (2,200 kgf-cm, 159 ft. lbs.) and stake it using a chisel and hammer. Check and fill M/T gear oil or A/T ATF then attach the front wheel with 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm torque and align the front wheels followed by ABS speed sensor testing for equipped vehicles.
