2005 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Rack and Pinion Power Steering Gear Assembly on 2005 Toyota Corolla?
A: Resistance and repair operations on rack & pinion power steering rack and pinion assembly must begin with straight-wheeled front positions followed by front wheels removal and engine under cover removal on both sides and the exhaust pipe assembly deinstallation for both engine types. Remove the column hole cover silencer sheet by pulling out two clips after using Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 to disconnect the tie rod end sub-assemblies (LH and RH). The first step is to secure the steering wheel with a seat belt before marking the intermediate shaft assembly No.2 and intermediate shaft components. After that, remove bolt A and successfully remove bolt B to separate the intermediate shaft assembly No.2. Remove the front stabilizer links (LH and RH) and front suspension arm sub-assemblies (Lower No.1 LH and RH) through the use of Special Service Tool: 09023-12701. The technician should remove the hood sub-assembly along with cylinder head cover No.2 and suspend the engine assembly with engine hangers using No.1 engine hanger: 12281 - 22021 along with No.2 engine hanger: 12281 - 15040 and Bolt: 91512 - B1016 which should be tightened to 38 Nm. Disassemble the front suspension crossmember sub-assembly together with steering column hole cover sub-assembly No.1 and steering intermediate shaft and mark both the intermediate shaft and pinion shaft before separating them. The rack & pinion power steering rack and pinion assembly should be removed through the disassembly of its 4 bolts and 4 nuts while maintaining the nut stationary during bolt torquing. Secure the rack & pinion power steering rack and pinion assembly in a vise using Special Service Tool: 09612-00012 then proceed to eliminate the left and right turn pressure tubes accompanied by Special Service Tool: 09023-38201 and their O-rings. First inspect the torque specifications for tie rod end sub-assemblies (LH and RH) before their removal. Uninstall the steering rack boot No.2 clamp while also removing the clips from boot No.2 and next the boots No.1 and No.2. Use Special Service Tool: 09922-10010 to extract the rack end sub-assemblies (LH and RH) and proceed with removing the rack guide and power steering control valve with precautions for the grooves. The technician should inspect the power steering rack before replacing its bearings and seals with appropriate Special Service Tools. The installation requires molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease and power steering fluid for proper lubrication steps. Installation of the final components requires placing all seals and O-rings with recommended lubrication and following correct installation directions.
