2005 Toyota Celica Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair a thermostat on 2005 Toyota Celica?
A: A repair or service job for the thermostat begins by draining engine coolant followed by removal of drive belt and generator. To access the cylinder block water inlet you need to remove its 2 nuts before relocating the thermostat while extracting the gasket. The thermostat needs to be immersed in water while repeatedly heated to test the valve opening temperature between 80.0 - 84.0 degrees Celsius (176 - 183 degrees Fahrenheit). If the thermostat fails to reach this range it should be replaced. To verify the valve lift you should measure it at 90 degrees Celsius (194 degrees Fahrenheit) temperature using a ruler; if the lift falls below 10 mm (0.39 inches) replace the thermostat. A proper replacement requires the valve to be entirely sealed when the temperature drops below 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). The thermostat installation requires placement into the cylinder block using a new gasket while the jiggle valve must face upwards with room for a 10-degree angle. After inserting the water inlet into place you should apply 10 Nm of torque to the two nuts before reinstalling the generator and its drive belt. To conclude the procedure you must add engine coolant followed by engine start-up and a leak inspection.
