The water inlet must be disconnected from the cylinder block by removing its 2 nuts to extract the thermostat and its gasket. The thermostat can be tested by putting it in water while increasing heat as the valve opening temperature should fall between 80.0 - 84.0 degrees Celsius (176 - 183 degrees Fahrenheit). A non-compliant thermometer will need replacement. Checking the valve lift is essential for the thermostat since it should open to at least 10 mm at 90 degrees Celsius. If the valve lift is below specification, the thermostat needs replacement. A malfunctioning thermostat requires replacement whenever the valve remains open below 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).
