2005 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the brake master cylinder on 2005 Toyota Camry?
A: Draining the brake fluid should be your first step in brake master cylinder overhaul while needing immediate cleaning of fluid spills on painted surfaces. You should disconnect the level warning switch connector during the process of removing both the air cleaner assembly and brake master cylinder sub-assembly. Use the Special Service Tool: 09023-00101 to untangle 5 brake tubes for vehicles without ABS whereas ABS-equipped vehicles need this tool for 6 brake tube removal. Remove the two nuts then extract the required sub-assembly from its location. You need to extract the brake master cylinder reservoir filler cap assembly with strainer alongside sub-assembly through screw removal and pulling out operations. To start the replacement process it is necessary to eliminate the 2 master cylinder reservoir grommets followed by brake master cylinder kit removal. The procedure requires inserting a master cylinder into a vise before removing the O-ring and pushing the piston inside. A pair of snap ring pliers then enables removal of the snap ring. Inserting pressure into the piston again allows the removal of the piston stopper bolt and gasket so you can extract the No. 1 piston sub-assembly straight out to protect the cylinder bore from damage. Place the waste cloth on top of wooden blocks with at least 100 mm (3.94 inches) distance between them to gently remove the No. 2 piston sub-assembly. Users should perform this process on vehicles equipped with VSC but must remove the straight pin after the piston is pushed in with a screwdriver. The brake master cylinder body should be checked for rust or scoring before installing the master cylinder kit where lithium soap base glycol grease is applied to the new piston sub-assemblies. Set the pistons in place while paying attention to the rubber lips before installing the gasket along with the piston stopper bolt which requires a torque of 10 Nm (100 kgf-cm, 7 ft. lbs.). Apply grease on both grommets after replacing the snap ring and O-ring then slide them into position. To reinstall the master cylinder reservoir sub-assembly use the screw and then perform reinstallation of strainer and filler cap assembly. Special Service Tools 09737-00020 and 09737-00013 must be used to check the brake booster push rod function until the piston pin makes a slight touch. Measure the push rod length using Special Service Tool: 09737-00020 until the pin lightly touches the pin head. The installation process concludes with fitting the brake master cylinder sub-assembly after torquing appropriate brake tubes to specifications and reattaching the level warning switch connector followed by filling the reservoir with brake fluid while utilizing Special Service Tool: 09023-00101 for master cylinder and brake line bleeding work. Reinstall the air cleaner assembly then check the fluid level before examining for brake fluid leakage.
