2005 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the rear Sway Bar Kit on 2005 Toyota Avalon?
A: The starting point for sway bar kit replacement is to remove the rear wheel first. Break the rear sway bar link assembly free on the left-hand side by removing both nuts and sway bar link but apply a 5mm hexagon wrench to hold the stud when the ball joint moves with the nut. The same method should be used to work on the right-hand side of the assembly. The left-hand rear sway bar link assembly can be inspected through 5 cyclic ball joint movements before nut application followed by torque wrench usage to slowly rotate the nut across 3 to 5 seconds per turn while measuring torque on the 5th turn; ensure the reading shows 1.0 Nm (10 kgf-cm, 9 inch lbs.) or less then install new components. Inspect the dust cover while examining for grease leakage and monitor for any abnormal sounds or strange drag during rotation. Start the procedure by uninstalling the rear sway bar kit using all its components - 8 bolts along with 4 sway bar brackets, 2 sway bar bushes and the sway bar kit. Mount the sway bar bush to the exterior of the sway bar kit stopper ring before installing the two sway bar bushes and four sway bar brackets with eight bolts which need to be tightened to 19 Nm (195 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.) utilizing bolts of the correct type (A, B). The left-hand rear sway bar link assembly should be installed while torquing its 2 nuts to 39 Nm (400 kgf-cm, 29 ft. lbs.). A 5 mm hexagon wrench might be needed to prevent the ball joint from turning during this step. The same sequence should be used for the installation of right-hand components. Replace the rear wheel by fastening its bolts to a torque of 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.).
